Image by Wry, diagnostic imaging Wentworth Douglas Hospital.
I was on the road,
face planted on blacktop,
a short step off a high curb.
Two broken arms
below the wrists,
goose egg above right eyebrow.
Residential street, low speed limit,
plenty of time for cars to stop.
Four cars managed to avoid
running me over; four cars
never stopped. Somehow
I retrieved glasses, hat,
high priorities don’t you know.
Somehow stood up, started to walk
back home; car five pulled over,
nice lady got out, talked me into car.
She and husband drove me home, made sure
Martha was there, would get me to hospital.
They came over next day
to see how I was doing,
brought cookies, card, smiles.
Four cars
faded…
away.
